I completed my virtual Marine Corps Marathon a couple of weeks ago. Here is my race review:
Weather: Picked a coolish day with low humidity. Started in a long sleeve shirt and stopped to change shirts after mile 14.
Course: The course was rolling hills, except for the last two miles. Lots of shade and not much traffic. The first eleven miles was a bit repetitive due to it being five laps of a neighborhood. Miles 11 to 14 were rolling hills on a neighborhood road around the local lake. Mile 14-stop at home to change shirts.
The next 10 miles continued in the other direction around the lake and surrounding roads. Again some repetition, up and down three times, of another road.
Mile 24 stop back at home to pick up gate fob. Then fairly flat out and back to finish the miles.
Aid stations/Port a johns: On course food was adequate and tasty as I carried it with me. Water, power ade, Pay Day fun size bars and Swedish fish. The race director did not provide any portable toilets on the course, but there were some wooded areas accessible if needed.
Crowd support: Distinct lack of crowd support on the course.
Overall, it was a good course even with the sections that were repeat loops or out and back. Finish time was slow due to a walk/run strategy. I completed the Semper Fi challenge virtually. Historic Half Marathon in the Spring and the Marine Corps Marathon in October. I did defer my in person registration for the MCM to another future year.
